To think just a year ago we all had high hopes for our new president. Who knew that just a mere one year later we would all be shaking our heads in disbelief at the sheer audacity of stupidity that would be committed by our guy O. Ted Kennedy rolled over in his grave yesterday and I bet he wishes he and Caroline had held out on giving O that big old endorsement that pulled O out from behind and helped him to kick some Clinton butt.
I never thought I would say this but I wish that Hillary had won at this point. This president has sold out on practically everything he campaigned on. You name it, Gitmo, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he got in bed with Pharma, he waffled on Don't Ask Don't Tell, Employment Non-Discrimination Act and various other issues.
His first big endeavor was to get Health Care Reform passed. Rather than lead he chose to sit on the sidelines and let Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid do the heavy lifting. Two people that Independents and Republicans revile. Rather than take the lead and educate everyday Americans about what we would get from HCR he let the Republican party tell Americans what it was with all of those Tea parties we had over the summer.
So as our president shifted to the center right, just like Bill Clinton did a funny thing happened. Those of us on the left became demoralized as we watched yet another Dem sell out and fail to do what he campaigned on. Then they have a little election up in Massachusetts and guess what those of us on the left stayed home and we lost a seat that we had occupied since the 1950's. How did we get in the mess we are in? He appointed Rhambo as chief of staff, you know the guy who helped Clinton get into the mess he got himself in.
The Democratic party has lost me. I will vote for some candidates, heck I may even donate to one or two of them. I will not however give the National Party, my State Party or our president a single solitary dime. I am going to take a few steps back and see about getting involved in local politics. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I may have bought the shit hook line and sinker but not anymore. This president is hopeless, he has no balls, and he lied to us. Let the republicans have all of it, let em own it like they did and run us into the ground, I expect that they will crush this country within 10 years and then hopefully we will get bailed out by the EU or China, then we will either be communist or socialist, at least then we might get health care, hell China just issues their first gay marriage licence. Communist fucking China is now more free than the God Damned Mother Fucking United States of America.
Let the Republicans have it all. I give up.

The liberal and progressive base is feeling totally disconnected from this president.
What I am concerned about is this:
Obama moved to the center after the election as most presidents do because governing almost always comes from the center.
That said, if his loses the senate and the house, where does Obama have to go then in order to not be a lame duck for the balance of his term? The center-right? The far-right?
People say this is what President Clinton was forced to do in order to be a successful president. I hope this isn't Obama's fate.
He's a weak willed wimp who is destined to be a one term wonder. I'll not vote for him again.
He doesn't lead, he lets others take the initiative - and they do. To his detriment. He lets go. Just see what happened in Massachusetts.
I too am discouraged. Part of it is the whole system - but much of it is the ineptitude and lack of courage of the Democratic Party in general. While Obama could have been stronger in his leadership, getting involved in the nitty gritty of health care reform shouldn't have been necessary. Reagan managed to get a whole bunch of stuff passed by just kind of waving his hand and saying "Here's what I'm looking for, please go do it." And Congress did it. I place a lot of blame on Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for not sticking to the tenets of what the president had outlined, which did include the public option for health care, for instance.
Rick, if you think national politics is bad, good luck with local politics. Our town is so dysfunctional it makes Congress look good. I sometimes question whether democracy really is the right method of government. The founding fathers actually came up with the idea of Congress because they didn't trust the people to rule directly and thought they had to have more erudite representatives. But that just means any idiot can win an election and go to Washington.
Very well said, and sadly--so true. Our best hope at this point is for Hillary to resign in a year and start campaigning again! Polls show that she is more popular now than Obama.
I really really wish Gavin Newsom could be talked into running for President on a 3rd party ticket.
The sad thing is that Hillary Clinton is even worse than Obama.
Silly squirrels. Obama is a great president, gave a great speech last night. DADT is not the burning issue of the day, nor is marriage equality. All that is bunk if there is no money flowing around, jobs being created or healthcare reform (which affects 1/6 of the economy).
My partner and I have been together for 11 years and WE would like to see these things addressed first!
Hey TravelingMan, I can think of 4 things that make me very happy about '09 and Obama's first year: 1) The economy is much better--the Dow is 33% higher! 2) Justice Sonia Sotomayor; 3) We have a first lady with style! 4) (Oh I have to tell you that one in private).
Giving up is for Republicans; if you don't believe me, just ask Sarah Palin.

None of it is a surprise. His votes as a Senator betrayed the rhetoric he offered at every campaign stop (saying the things that that particular audience wanted the hear and get their jollies with).
When you "let the Republicans have it", you are essentially bowing to the faux two party corptocracy that has you and others like you in this false conundrum.
Can you folks still not see the farce of the Duolopoy?
Are you just mad cause he didn't turn out as you "believed" he was?
Hell, let me break this to you as easily as possible... he NEVER was the way he lied you into believing.
And having Shillary is no different than McCain or ANY of those corrupt players in this farciful "system" of Imperialization and domination by fear and murder.
Join me in reality. Help break that brainwashing.
